Chris & Nicky’s Big Day – The Barnhouse, Walkington

As specialist Wedding Photographer in Hull, clients usually only need to book me once before I photograph their big day. You may remember me blogging about Dave and Laura’s wedding a couple of weeks ago where they needed to book me 3 times before i finally got them in front of my camera! Chris and Nicky booked me twice until I finally nailed them down last weekend for their big day at The Barnhouse, Walkington. They had their wedding booked for the end of last Summer but then decided they wanted a Mediterranean affair and started on different plans. I spoke to Nicky not too long after Xmas when she called to say they had changed their minds again and were brining their plans forward to May. I was still available and was delighted to be back on board to help. Nicky and Chris look like they have walked straight off the centre pages of GQ or Cosmo – a ridiculously good looking couple but with very specific ideas for their photography. They wanted pretty much pure photojournalism with little or no posed images. Now I would say that at least 65% of what I shoot at an average wedding is non posed but when I am using off camera lights, there is definitely a ‘structured’ element to my images.

I listened carefully to my couple’s brief and what came out of the day’s shoot was a fabulously natural set of images. It was so invigorating to shoot like this and although my ‘keepers’ percentage goes down, I shot more to compensate. Part of the ‘look’ that Chris and Nicky talked about wanting was based on their love of the iPhone app ‘Instagram‘ If you’re not familiar with it, Instagram is a photo sharing site that allows really cool vintage effects to be added to images before they go to an online sharing community. I’m not usually one for heavily processing my images, but with the way that i captured this particular wedding – I’m just loving the grungy retro feel of the post production. The black and white images have been given a film look by simulating Kodak TMAX 3200 – for any Old Skool analogue shooters out there, you will know how gorgeous this film is to shoot on!

Master Chef at Forest Pines

Just a quickie from a job that I did a couple of weeks ago over at Forest Pines Hotel and Golf Resort just near Scunthorpe. The company have amazingly high standards across their food and beverage oerations and as specialist East Yorkshire Commercial Photographer, I was asked to capture an internal company wide competition to find their own ‘Master Chef’. When I arrived, regional heats had already taken place so this was down to the wire with the final four young chefs.

Each chef had to create and present a 3 course meal to a panel of judges and then answer a set of questions on its preparation, costings and practical considerations. I love photographing food but when I get to capture it being prepared aswell, it makes for a great set of images. I’m really interested in ingredients and cooking in general so this stuff really is like a busman’s holiday for me. here’s a selection of some of the images from the even and i hope you enjoy.

Bob & Phillippa’s Big Day at Tickton Grange

I had the pleasure of spending Friday with Bob and Phillippa as they celebrated their wedding day at Tickton Grange. As a Hull Wedding Photographer, it was a fabulous day and I really enjoyed being there to capture all of the emotions as they played out. Pip and Bob have 2 young sons who are just absolutely adorable and getting lots of great images of them was very high on their wish list. I spent the morning with the groom and his groomsmen helping them get ready and although it was an overcast day, the light was just fab for me. I joined Phillippa at The Grange to photograph her preparations and I was totally amazed how chilled the girls were when I arrived – this was a theme that lasted for the rest of the day – I guess when you have 2 young sons, getting ready for your own wedding doesn’t present much of a stress!

The ceremony was an intimate affair and afterwards we went straight into group shots in the library bar – it was just too chilly for the bride and the children to do these outside. The rest of the day was filled with lovely family moments and I left the happy couple on the dancefloor just after 9pm. I hope you get a good sense of their special day from this small selection of images and i’m really looking forward to sharing the full collection in a couple of weeks time.

Real Weddings – Leanne and James’ Album arrives – Lazaat Hotel

There are so many Hull Wedding Photographers, I’m sure that couples in East Yorkshire get very overwhelmed when they are trying to find a professional with the right ‘fit’ for them. When I first met Leanne and James back in early 2010, we had a connection straight away. They knew I was right for them and with that connection came a very deep and satisfying relationship. I’ve just left their home in the ‘Outer Reaches of the Known Universe’ (that’s Burstwick to the rest of us!) after delivering their gorgeous A4 album with an aluminium plate cover.

I loved sharing the finished product with them and also the fab news that they are starting a family so I’m sure it won’t be too long before I see them again! Leanne just sent me the following text, I always think reactions to an album are so much more endearing when they come straight from my couples mouths and it’s definitely a big part of why I do what I do!

Hi, it was great to see you and the album today. I’m not great with words but looking through the album made it feel like only yesterday. You truly captured each and every special moment and we’d like to thank you for all you’ve done. – Leanne and James

Rowley Manor – Dave & Laura’s Big Day – Finally!

As a Hull Wedding Photographer I don’t normally expect it to take 3 separate bookings for a couple to finally get round to tying the knot – but to be honest Dave & Laura are not your typical couple! They first booked me to shoot their nuptials back in 2009 for a early 2010 wedding but nature stepped in and delivered Emilia – Dave and Laura’s first child – understandably, plans for the wedding were put on hold! The big day was re-scheduled for Xmas 2010 and I thought we were green for go until the phone rang and Dave told me they were expecting their second baby! Well they do say third time lucky and yesterday i got to spend an absolutely cracking day with Dave, Laura and their families at one of my second homes – Rowley Manor. The whole day was a fab experience, Dave and Laura are good friends of mine and so I really did feel like a guest at their wedding but I certainly had a camera planted to my face all day. I walked away with over 2000 images and captured so many emotions, laughs, funny incidents and much, much more. The collage below is a snapshot of the day with a collection of nearly 450 to share in total.

Cave Castle Hotel Weddings – Mel and Robs Album arrives.

Last year I photographed 9 weddings at Cave Castle Hotel and I feel really closely connected to this fantastic venue as I live about 3 minutes around the corner. I often meet clients there and shoot quite a few wedding pre-shoots in the grounds. As a Hull wedding photographer, I photographed Rob and Mel’s wedding at The Castle last July (check out their wedding here) and had the pleasure of delivering their album to them just before the Easter break. Their album is an A4 sized coffee table style book with an aluminium plate cover and was a joy to put together. These are the spreads from the book and I hope you enjoy! Portfolios for Artistes – Leroy Vickers

I recently blogged about the opening of my new specialist Yorkshire headshot and portfolio studio which is situated within the West 1 complex just off the A63 in Hull. In this small but ‘cosy’ environment, I’m able to work really closely with artistes/actors and actresses who are looking for a dynamic set of portfolio images to take their marketing and self promotion to the next level. I recently met Leroy Vickers at an event I was photographing where he was performing – he’s an unbelievably talented singer who performs a number of different acts – a lot of people will have seen him as part of the 4-piece opera group ‘Ti Amero’ or performing as a solo artist lending his hand to amazing ‘Rat Pack’ and Enrique Iglesias tributes.

These are just a handful of images from the day which show how dynamic looks can be achieved in a small space – size is not always everything!

It was great to work with Leroy, he came with a bunch of ideas on looks he wanted to achieve so we worked through these in the 3 hours we spent in the studio and he walked away with the images he wanted. Mrs D’s Album Arrives – it’s a beauty!

As a wedding photographer in Hull and East Yorkshire, I have the pleasure to meet and photograph some of the loveliest couples and their families in the world. I get to spend one the happiest days of their life with them and it’s just one of the reasons why I am so passionate about my work and looking after my clients. Every now and again, a couple come along that remind me that life is to be lived and savoured for each moment, none so much as Amy and Matthew. Lots of you who are reading this will no doubt know of the legend that was Matthew Davidson, you may have know him personally or professionally, I knew Matthew from an early age and my oh my was he ever a character! For those of you who didn’t know Matthew, he was one of the most successful hairdressers the UK has ever produced – a real artist of the highest order – and a complete professional. Matthew was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in January 2009 and passed away in July just a few months after he and his wife were married. I had the honour of photographing Matthew and Amy’s wedding back in April and it was definitely one of the highlights of my career so far – a real extravaganza and a total celebration of life. You can see my original blog post here which showcases their big day. I’ve been working with Amy for the last few months to put together an album that could tell such a vital and inspiring story. I usually ask my clients to chose around 60 images to tell their story over 40 pages – when Amy brought me her first round of selections, she had chosen 275! After a little bit of careful and selective editing, we were able to come to a final figure of 225 images and I knew this would be a colossal album! By the time the retouch was finished and I had assembling the layout it was at 80 pages – double to size of any album I have done before. Amy came to my office on Friday to collect her A3 album with an aluminium cover and also her Mum’s copy album which was an A4 size. The look on her face was priceless as she leaved through the pages and I imagined Matty looking down with a big grin! Rise Hall Suppliers Shoot – Sneak Peek

As a East Yorkshire Wedding Photographer, I had a great day at Rise Hall yesterday with the preferred suppliers team, we all got together to shoot each others products/services in preparation for the new brochure which will be published in a few weeks time.
